Effective environmental protection depends largely on the quality of information used for decision-making. Significant efforts have been made to develop technologies that assist environmental management and policy organizations in finding solutions to complex environmental problems, leading to the introduction of Environmental Decision Support Systems (EDSS). Issues arise when there is an excess of uncoordinated information from various sources and scientific fields, making it difficult to assess its quality. Another challenge is the dynamic nature of environmental problems. Computers play a crucial role in modern environmental protection, performing tasks such as monitoring, data analysis, communication, and information storage and retrieval. Therefore, using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to integrate and enhance these tasks is essential.
This study aims to review the impact of AI on EDSS in recent years. It explores the key features of an ideal EDSS and presents successful applications in solving environmental issues. The research examines various AI techniques used to improve and integrate processes in environmental management. It also addresses challenges such as the high volume of uncoordinated data and the complexities of decision-making when dealing with environmental problems and global changes. Given the critical role of computers in environmental protection, AI techniques are crucial for integrating monitoring and analytical tasks to enhance the performance of EDSS. This study demonstrates that AI can help organizations address complex environmental problems, contributing to sustainable environmental development.
