The present study investigates the impervious surfaces in Tehran (Zone 6 of Tehran) and its effects on urban runoff and floods. In the last half century, rapid changes in land use and population growth have led to the reduction of green space and the expansion of impervious surfaces. These surfaces are known as synthetic materials that prevent water infiltration and include roads, buildings, and other structures. The increase in the impervious surface increases the runoff caused by the rapid increase and this, in turn, increases the risk of floods in urban areas.Using satellite images and geographic software, this research has identified and analyzed the percentage of permeable and impervious surface in District 6 of Tehran. Then, using various algorithms and geographic software, the data was pre-processed, classified, analyzed, and after drawing the permeability and impermeability maps,The percentage of the areas of each level was checked. The results show that impervious areas in the whole city of Tehran are equivalent to 20.89% of the total area. However, in region 6, the ratio of the percentage of permeable surface to the total area of the region is only 10.19%, which shows that the percentage of areas that are permeable compared to the city of Tehran,in this region and indicating This is the area that this area is heavily affected by and there are unplanned devices and reduction of green space, which causes problems such as heat islands and surface floods. Finally,This study suggests improving surface water management and increasing green space as strategies to reduce impervious infiltration.
